Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology (AT)
The Commission for Social Care Improvement Partnerships (CSIP) has identified about 3000 assistive technology devices used to aid in the care of older people. ElderWorld supports care staff and any institution determined to provide the best care for older people. We provide products and services tailored to three areas.
Litigation and the use of new AT
The healthcare industry is innovative and new products become available all the time. However, devices take time to become understood and trusted. Formal requirements can take time to implement as everyone has to learn how new devices can be used safely and effectively. The primary (legal) requirement for devices used to care for vulnerable people is quality training. We live in a increasingly litigious world where regulation and best practice demands appropriately trained staff. There is no margin for error. Busy carers must be trained to use a device safely. They also need to know that equipment has been properly and regularly maintained along with how to check the safety of the device. This is mandatory and any carer who has not had the benefit of training and inadvertently harms a person in their care or themselves puts their employer at risk. Keep up with new ideas and training requirements
Information about useful devices; where to find them and how to use them will soon be accessible at the touch of a button the moment it is needed. ElderWorld constantly researches and reviews new devices and has begun work with many device providers to keep up with latest ideas and products. We link information about new devices – such as a secure bottle with specially designed drinking straw - to best practice documents from our governance division, to elearning to procurement. For example, a carer using ElderWorld’s free e-learning programme, Prevention of Falls, will learn, in context, that low fluid intake may cause dizziness and lead to falls.
